Plot wise, the movie/book is pretty basic. There's Elizabeth, who has four sisters - Jane (named after Jane Austen...also described as the most beautiful and desirable of the group...subtle, Jane Austen. Really subtle), Lydia, Mary, and Kitty - each of whom have their own characteristics which make them each identifiable. For example, Elizabeth (or Lizzie) is bookish and condescending. Jane, the oldest, is very kind hearted and happy all the time. Lydia is a flirt...well, as flirtatious as someone in the 19th century can be...Mary's mopey...and then there's Kitty...well...Kitty isn't really developed in either the movie or the book....ANYWAY. Their mother, Mrs. Bennet, believes that every rich, single man on the planet was put on this earth to impregnate her daughters. And, she is under the impression that "it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife". However, the wife they so desire must be one of her daughters. Obviously, Mrs. Bennet values money. The other two important characters, Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy, are two rich, single men. How fitting! Anyway, long story short, Jane and Bingley get together, as do Elizabeth and Darcy. The main romance throughout the novel is in fact Elizabeth and Darcy.
The romance between Lizzie and Darcy is where the title of the book comes from. Pride and Prejudice itself has a very substantial connection to the characterization behind Lizzie and Darcy. Darcy is too PROUD to do anything about his affections for Lizzie because she is of a lower social class, and Lizzie is PREJUDICED against Darcy for the fact that he is wealthy. These two issues seem to foil each other in that the two of them eventually see past these differences and end up together. These issues also connect to society and contribute to the reason as to why this book is a classic. Class struggles have always been an issue, but sometimes they can be overcome.
PICTURE TIME!
This is the whole Bennet clan (without Mr. Bennet..). From left to right, its Mrs. Bennet, Jane, Kitty, Mary, Lizzie, and Lydia. Without even knowing anything about the characters, their costumes are quite descriptive of them. All are simple, implying that they do not have a lot of money, which they don't. Jane's gives the impression that she is very modest and put together. Kitty's makes the statement that she is very young, which she is- she's the youngest of the group. Mary is just DEPRESSING which is definitely expressed through the bland brown and black thing she has going on. Lizzie is very realistic and free thinking, which is reflected through her outfit. Her simplistic dress shows that she really doesn't care about fanciness or embellishment, which she doesn't. She's wearing her fathers coat and not a cape or a cloak as social norrms would have required, and she lacks a hat, showing that she is a very free thinking person. Lydia's dress is very young and modern for the time period, which she was.
There is a ball and that is where Elizabeth and Darcy meet for the first time. The dress which she wears for the event is very simplistic, as are the rest of her costumes. Simple, plain, white, and what seems to be chiffon. Still a gorgeous dress, even though it has no embellishments. But, then again, really none of her costumes do.....oh well. That reflects her character - she's quite simple.
In contrast to the fancy white dress, there is the much simpler brown dress This dress exemplifies a typical Austin dress - basic pattern, empire waist, no real shape, but still elegant. This dress makes my personal list of favorite costumes ever just because it is so gorgeous and simple
Lydia...well...in this shot, I guess Lydia is not a happy camper. However, she is wearing yellow! Which is the color for innocence and youth and joy and all that good stuff! From the limited view of the dress, it is very accurate for the time period, neckline wise and pattern wise.
Darcy is the one in the blue, Bingley is the one in the grey. Both very accurate for the time period costume wise, they are both very interesting characters. It is kind of evident from this picture alone that Darcy is NOT a happy guy....like ever.
The costumes and the movie are amazing interpretations of Austen's classic novel. However, there is another, rather less known adaptation of Pride and Prejudice - a YouTube series called "The Lizzie Bennet Diareis", which is a modernazation of the story told vlog style. It's quite east to get REALLY addicted REALLY quickly and watch the whole series in a weekend.
Overall, it is a very good version of the movie. With great costumes, music, plot, and cast, this movie version of Pride and Prejudice is a great adaptation.
